if you haven't research any keywords, how will you suppose to optimize your site? you just can't have all keywords available. you need to have list of priority ones.

for the latest google updates,domain-name ranks higher than domain.name, i think using dash domain names is also helpful for rankings.

yeah same here. because for me, since i am optimizing google, why not use their tools to know exactly keywords statistics.

single keywords have very high in competitions specially if the niche is very popular. i go for long tail keywords first before i have my single keywords.

you can have your own list of keywords and do the research manually. but you will be needing a tool to distinguish the number of competitions and the number of searches you have for that keywords.
