    Arrow Forum management

once me and 2 of my friends started a forum Joomla + kunena, (i was a mod) and we got hundreds of members, but nearly all of them were spammers. But I don't see that kinda spammers here in imt. How to avoid them ?

We used captcha system and email confirmation, it also didn't work. After that the admin of the forum, (a friend) decided to close the forum because of spam problem. When he closed the forum, it had more than 3000 members + 1500 threads. All got within 3 months.

So I want to ask from Nemanja or anyone who has experience as a forum admin, how to avoid these spammers buy registering and commenting ?

I am assistant admin on an established forum. We have always done manual approval of all accounts. I use the tool at: Stop Forum Spam to check applicants. Since January, when apparently Xrumer learned how to solve captchas, there are 10 - 15 applications a day that I reject and delete. That combined with alert mods keeps that forum spam free. There is a strong no spam policy, and those that do slip through are deleted along with their posts.

There are lot ways to get it under control. Strict and regular control matters lot. No point of banning these spam members specially if they join just to make profiles. You need to delete and keep deleting these profiles. Also you can save time and work load by using a mod which disable editing profile and signature till the member reach a post limit and time limit.

the problem we had was these spammers registered and they made new threads with lot of links in it. Mostly about Viagra and related stuff. They didn't use any signature. we disabled signatures, but couldn't stop them, bcause they came not for the signature, but for make threads.

Sorting out that is a piece of cake. When you delete a users there is a option to pick like "Delete all topics and posts user made". So just one click and all those spammy topics along with user will be gone. All forum scripts have this. This is something I do every morning. deleting all spam users. doesn't take much time.

I'm always for prevention rather that fixing things later...
I don't know how things are working for Joomla, but for VB you have many addons that you can install which will make certain things to the registration form to prevent boots registering and this is the worst problem, I'm also using captcha + email confirmation + ...
But people will join manually, so you need to prevent them from posting junk to your forum and in their or other members profiles, luckily for me VB have some great default user management options,
so you can divide your members into categories, I have one category which is most critical and these are "just registered members", for them I have restricted anything possible that can be restricted for making spam links or other spam messages...
So they need to wait 7 days and reach minimum of 25 posts to have sigs and post live links, also then they can edit their profiles, post profile messages, get bigger mailbox, etc... after they reach 100 posts and they are members for 15 days, they become full members and have much more options, etc...

I do same but no matter what we do there are accounts we need to weed out manually. In one of my forums I have rules set as 30 days and 25 posts to for signature and posting links in forum. There was one loonie who waited 30 days then posted "Hi" in 25 topics in welcome center.

There was another girl who posted a link and mentioned " the link was verified and permitted by one of the mods " !

Spammers come out with all kind of crazy and creative ideas to by pass rules and restrictions. I know VB has wonderful set of managment tools as you can expect from a excellent paid forum script. my favorite is SMF but their mods about managements are very complicated to install.

yes, can delete a user with all his posts and threads, but everyday we had to delete 50 + spammers. So it was a trouble for us.

the CMS we used Joomla + kunena was not so advanced as VB, thats the problem I think. We couldn't stop them. Kunena gives very less forum options since its a new forum extension to Joomla.

Why not considering moving to VB?

Well if you can use something like OpenID logins then it can limit spamming a lot or at least those bots. Kunena too new to have seasoned MODs.

I think enabling open id, may increase the problem more, since anyone can publish threads and posts even without registering.

VB is an very costly solution. That's why I guess. I made my forums about my hobbies and I don't even have ads on those. Unless you have already having profits or have a long term plan to earn from the forum is would be a costly solution.

yea, our forum admin didn't want VB, because its not a free forum software, and he didn't want phpBB because phpBB has less options. But Joomla + kunena can get many options, so he chose that. However at last he decided to close the forum with 1000 + original threads and 3000 + members (most were spammers). within 3 months all closed. I was just a mod there.

He can try SMF 2.0. Since I moved to 2.0 I found those bot attacks dramatically decreased. Although final version of SMF 2 still hasn't released I have used it for over 6 months now without a problem. I used myBB which is great and very simple to add MODS but hard to control spam.

we realized after that incident, VB is the best for a forum, even more better than myBB and phpBB.

Of cause VB is the best forum script no doubt about that but it's not free, That's the problem. How many can pay for it ? So have to pick the best free forum script.

I heard great things about SMF 2 also, maybe you can try this one if money is an issue here.

It's really great. Lot better than the previous version. Lot of new forum management tools too. Also it's lot more spammer proof than the old version which was a spam magnet.

But for those who like to have something look and feel like VB then myBB is the best one. Also it's easy to install plugins in myBB. Like in SMF you don't need to edit all core files.

I don't like to start a forum, but I think my friend who had a Joomla+kunena forum will start a new forum with VB after few months., This is his last term of the university. No any other CMS except VB.
