Personally? I do it myself, and when I do, I make sure that I add to the forum as well. Primarily I would join a forum to talk to people, share ideas and help out where I can, even if its only to help give advice. Yes, I get a signature link or two, but at the end of the day I feel that, if I am not adding anything to the forum, then I shouldn't be getting backlinks from them.

Combinations is good because will show natural
I use software, but for some forums i just go in and post a little. It is very hard to index profiles now. I mean it is a nightmare, they get crawled but to get indexed....
Best idea is to create some forum profiles using software and than for some of these go in and actually get to know the community.
I consider people who use software to create forum profiles as complete lazy idiots. First of all, majority of any decent forum will have anti-spam or anti-bot questions in place that software will not be able to fill in. You end up wasting more time going back over all those forums that you need to create manually.
Second, and most importantly, profile backlinks are much weaker than backlinks you can get from links within the forum itself. I have done this for years and I rarely get any of my profile links indexed, but most of my links on forum posts. You are wasting good links by only making a profile and nothing else. I don't care if you contribute something to that forum or not, or use techniques like letting your posts age, or my signature steganographic spamming, just don't waste good forums by just making a profile if you want results.

I admin on a small forum. That forum manually approves all applications. About 50% are automated signups that get rejected immediately because they show up in the StopForumSpam database. Many of the ones that get past that initial screen are obviously only there for the profile link, but they can't complete the profile until their application is approved. A high percentage of them never return to update their profile, so they have a forum profile without even the possible benefit of a link.First of all, majority of any decent forum will have anti-spam or anti-bot questions in place that software will not be able to fill in. Software can potentially be superior to manual if the software creates the links in a natural way(not too many links at one time) and is designed to also add unique content to each profile, if there isn't software like that, I think manual is overall > for this type of linkbuilding because it's easier to customize profiles with content especially when you are creating forum profile links on different types of forum sites that that were built with different scripts.
If you are going auto just for the links, I think blog comments are better than forum profiles.
If you want to establish your site as an authority site being active in a highly regarded forum well worth the effort.
You Confucian both software and also use Manual to make it more natural and avoid Google penalties for God.
I go manually every time...fills better..
manual is the best, i think software is just seen as spam.
ok yeah semi, is abit of both aha
yes i do also manually
