According to my point of view directory submission is a technique of increase page rank of website. And it's a very cost-effective way to get links and helps to establish a foundation for Internet marketing.

Agree with all the mentioned advantages of submitting our site to directory. This is the reason of why get listed on directory is not as easy as other backlink building method, especially DMOZ and Yahoo Directory.

Good posts in here, I never really bothered with it till I am onto this forum, Now I am making more of an effort with it to increase the traffic to my own website.

I'd rather find 5 edu blogs to post a comment and get 10 times the effect...
Directories are not of much influence for your ranking....unless...maybe...if you create thousands of links that way.
It's good for getting urls indexed...but so is digg.com.

Directory Submission is a nice way to increase the traffic on your website because it allows you to post the ads, the link of the website and sometimes the bio of the author. In this manner the costumer see the details and how they can access your company.

Can someone explain how to get high quality backlinks from a web directory, unless you have your link in their main page. Also I wonder it would be high quality backlink unless the directory is niche related.

Almost all the times deep pages of directories have 0 PR. So you won't get any PR juice from those deep links. I used to be huge fan of web directory submissions but not anymore.

that's true.. the only thing to get high quality backlinks which i think is to submit to paid directory..but even though your links is featured, the features posts is rotating, but there are other paid directory also that place your link under high pr pages.. but personally i think free directory can't give much impact or doesn't give at all due to your link is place in deep pages

Agree with you @franberries, submission on paid directory worth useful than free directories because paid directories are highly consider of quick approval of our links.

Directory Submission always have a quality links, so its well worth :)

but it will cost you a lot... usually the higher PR of that directory mean the higher yearly fees you need to pay.. some people just choose the quality ones, in spite of quantity,

Even can paid directories help ? If they sell paid links than means it's against Google search guide links. So you will risking your site to be penalized by Google. If not then links should be noFollow which means no PR juice and no point of paying money for a nofollow link.
