Good question, because i notice that one of directory is taking us to as of Nov. 2011.

Directory call good directory with following qualification:
- Old directory (domain registered over 5 years)
- very good Alexa rank (or traffic rank)
- very good PR rank (5 or above)
- directory owner keep checking dead links every month or less and remove those links.
- popular in many countries.
- get very good link back
- it should have few or more .edu links ( You can find out by using site:.edu domain.com)
- Directory owner is keep doing advertise to get more traffic or higher some to get traffic so traffic can be share with advertisers.
- advertise in PR news, articles, social bookmarking and more.

Please, make your own judgement, don't fall in love with those directories who is under two years with high traffic and high PR, because most of them sell their directory and new directory owner does not know how to run the directory. Directory should not be under 5 year with high PR and traffic when you make list of very good directory. Good luck to all.

And don't forget directories won't bring you traffic, they are just for seo purposes so if the link value is no good then it's not worth submitting. Niche directories related to your niche are much better than general ones. And don't ever do a reciprocal with a directory!

How to find which directory is better for SEO? example if you search in Google for -> arts web directory <-- or --> anysubject web directory <--keyword whatever directory you find in 1st and 2nd page that is the one you should submit your site to or may be 3rd page too.

Good luck to all who is spending money on those free directory for feature link, new directories, and new directories who get very high traffic in 1st few months and they are dead, Reason?
1) New directories don't have high budget to advertise.
2) New directory owner use free link building just like other spammers do so that mean directory owner is posting their link in group of spammers from world wide.
3) They will get is lots of spammers and free advertisers just link new directory owners.
4) New directory owner is happy because Adsense impression and few clicks can service them for paying $5 or $15 per month hosting cost.
5) Once, traffic ranking or lots spammers come to free directory, hosting owner request to upgrade their server or move to more costly server compare to what they have been paying in #4 at above.
6) Now, owner try to sell it or site will keep going off, because of limited bandwidth.
7) New directory owner will try to earn more by two ways:
A) keep making fraud click on adsense.
- this end up by getting banned from Google Adsense or they might survive.
B) Free directory is not free any more.
- Directory will as for as little as $1 or above.
- Now, many spammer will slow down to coming to this directory, because it's not approving for free.
- If any site owner think that this directory is getting lots of traffic so they would not mind paying little $ (but sorry for them)
- Now, traffic will slow down and 20% -50% spammers link will be dead, because spammer were using blogspot, or any free hosting service and those hosting will banned them. (now, who got the award for having dead links = new directory owner)
- Google or any SE will not like crawling directory with lots of link.

This is not for every new directory, because any success directory were new one day, so please try to understand our general suggestion. Good directories page / sub-folder often found on first few pages of Google results.
