Protect your content with "http header canonicalisation"

Today while searching Google, I found an interesting article on protecting document content.

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Supporting rel="canonical" HTTP Headers

Give your reviews on this statement.

Canonical URLs are not intended to protect your content from copyright infringement. They protect you as a site owner from a duplicate content penalty for the material on your site. In addition to the www and non-www versions (search engines see two URLs) most CMSs offer multiple paths to view a page. These are all separate URLs and appear as multiple copies of a page to the search engines. Canonical URLs tell the search engines that there is only one true page for any given content.

I wanted to know if does it really matter to put this rel=canonical for site protection against duplication. Or you can disregard this

For the static section of your site it is less important, but you would be wise to add it as a safety measure. For the blog your SEO plugin will take care of the tag. Just be sure that canoniacal URLs are enabled in the options.

You should also choose between the www and non-www form of your domain URL at this point. Make sure that you are consistent in using your preferred URL when you build links. Go to 'redirects' in the domain section of your cpanel and set up a redirect so that all incoming traffic using the alternate URL is redirected to your preferred URL.

Only the sentence beginning "For the blog . . ." and the one following apply to WP.

This is new for me I haven't tried this yet. If it is for showing the domain is the one having the pure content, I should try this on the blog or a website, but does it really have importance with SEO aspect
