There has been much publicity about this technique and Huffington Post is often quoted as a super example.
Basically you are quoting content from other sources and adding some of your own comments (to make it unique).
But if this technique is taken up widely - aren't Google going to take action? Who wants to see lots of sites dominating google searches with essentially duplicate content.
To be honest i don't know about this technique but after read your tweet i will read it and try to understand its importance and usage that how it can help us in SEO campaign.
My opinion only but I could see this work if your comments are good and long enough and there is plenty of other good content on the site. Just rehashing existing already published material is unlikely to get you far.

It works for me. The bottom line from this content curation techniques is not getting organic traffic solely, but traffic from their subscribers. So if you do this, you should add subscriber form in your blog.
