Keyword density is the number of times a keyword is used on a web page in proportion with other words. You can calculate the keyword density of a particular text as:
    keyword count/ total word count * 100.

The idea is to use them in such a clever fashion that neither does it hinder readability or dilute the real message (as in the case of keyword stuffing), nor is it a case of under-utilization. To say that 0.2% or 2% or 5% is the 'most appropriate' density is something laughable.

Keyword density means the frequency of keywords on your content. As one of the members said it is calculated as percentage.
Although Google webmaster guidelines are silent about the recommended keyword density. But according to some experts it must be 3 % means you keyword may appear 3 times in a paragraph of 100 words. whereas others say that it may be 2 - 5 %.

I would recommend you to read the following article in this regard.
    Keyword density

Keyword density means the percentage of the keyword or keyword phrase on the page with other contents. It is important for the keywords to increase the rank in the search engines with correct optimization of content and no. of occurrence of your targeted keywords.

Summing it all, keyword density should be high enough. A keyword should be recognized as a main topic of a page and not as an unimportant one. But one should pay attention that keyword density should not be too high. Some search engines may not like a page to be so filled up with a keyword. Make a clear content.

There is no perfect keyword density!!!

I have checked a few sites which are ranking on high comp. Keywords very well and every site have different density!

Matt Cutts says... do not overload your keywords in content.. so it will looks like keywordstuffing and spam.

Google loves natual.. so your density and placing of your keywords must also looks very natural...

So densitiy is not a big fact.... as backlinks and authority.

Keyword density of 3-5% is advisable, but more importantly be natural in placing the keywords. It should make the reader understand what is the content about.

These are good definitions - but do not forget that you must be cautious in spamming especially when you are customizing your wordpress blogs. Do not stuff your articles too much with your keywords. Do it sparingly.

    Post Re:

As I know Keyword density just means the percentage that the keywords appear in the content versus rest of the text. In general, it's also a fairly useless metric for SEO. I wouldn't bother building a script for it as you'd be better off concentrating on other metrics.

Hi paddy. As per my knowledge many SEO experts consider the optimum keyword density to be 1 to 3 percent.

Keyword density is the major part of SEO. The keyword density to be 1 to 2.5 percent means that if you have writing 100 words then you can insert only 1 keyword. One thing keep in mind that is don't use more & more keywords otherwise over keyword density may effect your website ranking also.

Keyword density refers to the ratio (percentage) of keywords contained within the total number of index able words within a web page. In general, I recommend using a keyword density ratio in the range of 2-8%.

You should avoid your keywords density more then 4% because when you exceed this limit it will be keywords stuffing and when google will find keywords stuffing in your website or articles from where you are getting backlinks it will not be good for your website ranking.
