    First of all meta descriptions are not affective as you may think, but you put this in the <head> section of your website/blog:
    <meta name="description" content="Some description." />

    A META Description tag, for those of you who write your web pages using raw HTML code, looks like the following:
    <meta name="description" content="put your page description here" />

    Give a brief description of your page in this tag. Bear in mind that this description (or part of it) will be displayed in the search engine results so try to make sure you phrase it in such a way that the person searching can tell at a glance that he's found the correct page for his search. Minimize irrelevancies and put the essentials near the beginning of the description so that if the search engine only accepts the initial (say) 150 characters, the essential parts of your description will still be displayed.

    Not all search engines use this tag. For example, Google normally only displays the text surrounding the matching keyword that the searcher used

    Yes google dispalys the surroundig words of the query so that's why you should use your keywords in titles and descriptions.

    How do you figure that one out? If you look at the source code for any web page, the meta details are found at the top of the page in the <head> section of the code. It doesn't show on your page at all, just gives a crawling spider more information to read when it visits your page.

    IMO They may not be very efficient, but they can help you out. When I optimize a page, I generally make sure that the page title, meta description and even meta keywords are added in.
    Google generally uses your meta details as a description when it shows your site on a page, but they can also use pieces of the content from your page as the details.

    I could be wrong but I'm assuming MorganFieldwueq is doing what I do there.

    When I write an article or post I make sure to include my target keyword in the first sentence. Then, after writing it just copy the first paragraph or so (I usually limit myself to 160 characters) and paste it in the meta description field.
    What's Working Now - What works right now.

    This is a good practice, but I think most SEs consider only 150 first chars in meta description.
    If meta description is not found by spiders then SEs generate one from your webpage content for their search result listing.

    Meta description is the most important section of a website since Google and other search engines use this particular section while determining the relevancy of a particular in a particular search query. You need to use keywords carefully here in this section and remember one thing that Google sees only 160 characters and that means you have to sum things up within that limit.

    Description should be according to the titles of web page. Title displays the important keywords or phrases of your web page.
