Thread: SEOing an Ecommerce Store (onpage)

Hi guys,

I've been in the IM game for years but just wanted to get your opinion on product descriptions and SEO. 100 words 200 words, keyword density, or just the same as I'd on-page articles (but with less words)? Any tips or tricks?

I've written for many ecommerce stores but I rarely agree with my clients in terms of SEO.

Being a WordPress fan I haven't owned a php site before. There is the option to rewrite the URL, which I know that I want domain.com/category-product-1.html - any tips here, or should I write a code to rewrite the dynamic URLs to static ones? Or is it easier just to rewrite them manually as I work through the site?

That is a bit of a contradiction, WP is a php script. If you have been using search engine friendly URLs in WP they are rewritten in the WP script.

Oops, I meant I haven't owned anything but a WP site (bar one Joomla one). The last e-commerce shop was a weird one, too. Nothing like this new one.

hmmm, what's so different about it? Maybe if you added a review in our review section we could help more. I'm just not really understanding why you would want to optimize this one differently than other's you've done. (maybe its just me )

As long as the script will rewrite the titles in the format that you want I would go that route. I would be more concerned with the meta description on the product pages and having the product name and model in an h1 tag. Then SEO the content in the normal way.

OK thanks, I think I should have worked out properly what I was asking first instead of creating a new thread. It just seems like a daunting task at the moment....ie. years and years worth of work. I couldn't trust anyone with outsourcing any parts as I know I'd just go and change it all

I think we are naturally SEOing the product descriptions in our normal way, let's just hope it's right. I've only really created mini sites and affiliate sites so this is a really big task.

There should only be one h1 tag on a page. It amazes me how many page templates put the site name in the h1 tag. I often edit the templates to put the site name in styled p tags. I am not sure that search bots are smart enough to discount that initial h1 tag, and why offer them the opportunity for confusion? If there is only the proper one h1 tag per page they can't get it wrong.
