make the image file names relevant ie. german-shepherd-dog.jpg instead of img_87654837568.jpg
Use Photoshop or similar to make the file size as small as possible whilst retaining a good quality look. Use the 'save for web' feature.
Resize to the intended pixel size of how you want it on the page.

You could use tools.dynamicdrive.com/imageoptimizer/ or load up photoshop or Fireworks and optimise them that way. If you decide to do more, combine your css files into one and then optimise that and js files.

    hi Monika,

it's really easy to optimize images for search engines. for that you will have to do 4 simple steps.

    1. optimize the images and see which format of image loads fast (jpeg/png). for that you will have to check the weight of the image.
    2. when you are embedding the image in the webpage you will have to enter the keyword in the alt tag of the image
    HTML Code:
<img src="source of the image" alt="keyword for the image" />
    3. add a title tag for the image also.
    HTML Code:
    <img src="source of the image" alt="keyword for the image"  title="main keyword"/>
    4. have the image in the sitemap of the website which the search engine bots visit.

hope this will help you to get your image indexed by the search engines for the particular keyword.

    kindest,
    abhishek kundu

For Image Optimization have a suitable "alt" tags for the image. Then to make the load time of the site less, make the image memory size less I mean compress it. As 'kundu' said thats the code to assign it.

    - Create faster loading graphics for your website
    - Optimize your image size
    - Use relevant name to the images
    - Use Alt and Title tag for your images
    - Image load time should be less

Images in your site can also drive traffic to your site through Image search.
