How to start SEO for an E-Commerce site?

The first thing you need to do is go to each page of your website . It does matter how big the site is it will take lots time but it is worth it becuase with long tail product names ompage seo is super important. You need to have the keyword twice in title and description tag. You also need to have it one time in h1 header and 3-5 in content part. Also social book mark each page 10 times. You will get ranked for lots of the keywords.

make sure to make text rich content on your site, with keywords naturally implemented, then liek fredsmith said remember h1 header tags.

those are the simple basics of internal seo.

If you want fast results, sell on eBay or Amazon. Worry about a website if you sell items that these services don't allow.

i am not aware of the cms that you are using for your website, but you should check that the on-page seo factors are taken care of correctly.

1. the title of the webpage should have the keyword.
2. you should have a description of the page in the head section

HTML Code:

<meta name="description" content="Your descriptive sentence or two goes here.">

3. you should also have few keywords mentioned in the head section of the website (this is not looked by google but other small search engines do)

HTML Code:

<meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2">

keep in mind not to use more than 5 keywords in this section
4. you should also have your main keyword in <h1></h1> tags in the page
5. the product that you have in the website should have a good description of it with the keywords in it.
6. if you have a picture of the product then try to use the alt="" tag in the image.
7. if you can then have another <h3></h3> tag in the webpage with the keyword in it.

after all these on page tasks are done try to create an xml sitemap of your website.

I own several e-commerce websites. SEO is not much different for them as it is for other sites, BUT you can run into problems more especially when you sell a lot of products. Because of my automated system of adding meta titles to products, many of my products have duplicate titles to google.

Do I care? Not really, I have first page rankings for all my main keywords. In the end, it comes down to backlinks. You can have horrible on-site SEO but if you have enough backlink it will make up for it.

Just make sure you use a good CMS and learn how to do on-site SEO with it.

Get backlinks, and good primary backlinks, for example,create some squidoo lenses, create some wordpress blogs, and write revies articles of your primary products you are selling. Bookmark those backlnks, create a rss feed for them, yahoo answers is a good place, a lot of people are asking for specifically items recomendations, and you can get good backlinks from there, create coe youtube's videos reviewing your copies, etc. I mean its like any sit, but the advantage is, if you know ow to implement the strategy, that you can find very potential buyers, and get backlinks at once.

I would remark its also important to care about unique content in e-commerce sites. A lot aof pleople copy and paste contents about products, but thats external diplicated content and google will look bad at sites that are telling the same than others, so take your time to create good products titles and descriptions

Onpage is equally important if your on page is not good irrespective of hard work you do off page you will get fruitful results.
