True, but if you also have many quality links pointing back to your site, its possible that a search engine can actually find your site by following them, without you having to submit your site at all. The amount of links your site has pointing to it is what makes it an authority site (besides domain age etc.), and also affects your ranking. If you used this on a lower level keyword that doesn't get many searches, you would rank your site well in little time, and virtually no on page optimization at all.

Yep, it depends on the competition for the keyword. If competition is low and it's a fairly long kw, then your site can show up on first page, have seen it many times.

If your site is well optimized with on-page optimization and has a quality and unique content, then your site can get a good PR.

It is possible, but very unlikely in a worth while market.
Also, if you don't get any links at all you are doing yourself a dis-service. Why make it hard for yourself, when you will rank much better with links

That is not true. PR comes from links. Unless you have a lot of content, many pages, then it is impossible you will get PR.

It can happen, but hardly without backlinking building, if you mean for niche related domain, and if you want to happen in some weeks.
It can take many months, or years but if you have high quality content or your blog is really really good (example: boingboing, or dooce) then your readers will find you and you will get a lot of backlinks naturally without you do almost nothing but keep writing.

If you trying to rank for some profitable keyword that it is pretty much impossible. Building backlinks is necessary these days.

Based on my experience, it is possible to rank without link building. I have created a blog and post lots of contents and when I try to check its keyword I was shocked that it is in rank 11 for a non competitive keyword

I have site on page one, with no content and with no backlinks; with Global Monthly Searches 4,400 [Exact]

If your content is outstanding and pages are written as a "theme" with the appropriate relevant keywords, you can get on page one on gogle for non-competative keywords and even with low competition keywords. After several crawls of your website google really checks the content and how it's written. Also use internal linking to other pages using your keywords.

To be sure I would however create a few free blogs (blogger.com, wordpress.com, etc.) and submit between 5 to 10 articles to the major article websites, just in case others found the same keywords (and they will).

yes, it is possible if you can full fill you on-page Seo properly, i have got some result with out linkbuilding.

yes i have a blogspot blog that higher rank with first 5 results in last 6 month with 30 Niche keywords i have not build a single link yet

Google has been focused on Content since last year and I think Now there is bigger and better chance to rank without any link building. Since the First Panda update several my small sites with unique content started kick in and now rank top at their keywords. I haven't done any link building for any of these sites. Even before my WP blogs and blogger blogs ranked even without building.

It can be done, but your site has to be very well optimized. Having an exact match domain name will certainly help with this as it will hold value with Google. Link building will speed this process up though and is obviously a huge part in ranking highly. I would say DO build links, but if you're not focusing on it only look for high PR, low OBL, quality links.

On page optimization can pay results because some websites that have more than 101 external links has a poor PR of 1 due to unsolved on page issues and spammed content.Quite a pity one such site has forum also and could not get good traffic results.Good content, interactivity, blogging and effective social media optimization can prove permanent ranking.

If you can make excellent combination between keywords, title,meta tags and web content, then it is possible to rank any keyword without link building. But link building is necessary to keep that rank up for a long time in SERPs.

I don't think so because back link brings traffic and if you do not have any traffic then how will you rank in SERP.

i think it is impossible. good ranking= content + backlink.
both is needed and must.
besides, there are many way to get backlink, why not?

Before this latest Panda update it was pretty easy to get to the top on non-competitive keywords as long as your site was themed well for the niche. Now it seems that the longer tail keywords aren't as easy to hit with just content anymore. Seems like you need some links to the interior pages to rank higher for those longer tail keywords.

It depends upon the competition and uniqueness of your website, some times it happens.But off page optimization plays a biggest role in improving the website ranking as quickly as possible.
