yes its very effective and give benefit for your site these are miner things but give your site good advantage, and will refer it.

See, when you have two versions of your website (www and non-www), this may result in splitting of backlinks and traffic.
If you have both the verified versions and a preferred version in Google webmaster tools, this will merge your backlinks and traffic from both version of your website.

Don't think, such redirections will give any added benefit.
