Exact keyword research means, people searching for that exact phrase in square brackets (search traffic for that particular keyword)
Example, [dog training] would return results ONLY for the exact keyword phrase ‘dog training’.

Broad keyword research could be any search including any words in the phrase in any order without quotes or brackets.
Example, broad match results for dog training will also include search traffic for ‘dog training, training a dog, training a small house dog, dog obedience and trick training’, etc.

    How to do keyword research?
Proper keyword research can help you optimize your website in a more efficient manner. Use of LSI keywords is encouraged.
-Check how competitive your keywords are
-Keywords should be relevant to the content your website offers.
-Check for the popularity of keyword among users(monthly searches)
-Keywords should be a blend of Short tail , long tail and LSI keywords.
-Keyword density also plays an important role
You can go for light keyword research by using Google adwords tool.
I need to check the profitability of keywords so I prefer ‘keyword country’ for extensive keyword research and it works for me.

One tip is here and great for me while working on Adsense Micro Sites.

Keyword Exact Searches = 2000 and Above
Keyword Competition = Medium ( Adword Score less than 0.7)
Keyword CPC = 2.5$ and Above

This is my Golden Rule and at least works for me. But the must thing is Unique Content for which I am paying a lot

If you want to see exact result which you really want then use exact keyword search rather than broad keyword. Because broad keyword research will give you a too many results related to that words or not related as well.

Before using any keyword research tools its better to do little bit brainstorming of yourself such as who are your visitors ? what's their need ? what solution you are providing ? etc. keyword research is not a one-time process and also not end.

I agree with this. also, keyword that is exact or broad doesn't matter if you know your market and you optimized your website onpage.

    Hi

To do keyword research in its most effective way you have to take some things into consideration.

First of all there are two types of keywords. Longtail keywords which have more than 5 words, and shortail keywords, which have no more than 3-4 keywords.

To find a profitable keyword it has to have a high amount of searches and low competition. Longtail keywords usually have lower competition.

Go to google's keyword tool and type in your keyword. When the results load, you want to look at the global monthly searches and anything over 2.000 searches is a potentially profitable niche. This tool also brainstorms for you as it comes up with keywords similar to your search and their monthly searches. So you can get good ideas from there as well.

To see how much competition your keyword has, go to google and type in your keyword in speech marks(""). This will show you exactly how many results have the same keyword. Anything over than 60.000-70.000 will be pretty hard to compete with. This is exact keyword research, whereas broad keyword research is done without the speech marks and you see results similar to your keyword and not only the exact ones.

I hope you found this helpful.
