Keywords around 3 to 4 is what I normally go for, but have found that on site content is just as important is not more so. If they find you, you want them to stay on your site as long as possible for better results, that's where your quality content comes in big time.

Quality content doesn't automatically mean they'll stay on your site longer.
It depends on how you bring your content to them...

Although short tail keywords are better but in start long tail are better to target. There are many users who type the long tail keywords when they find nothing relevant to their need.

It's always advisable to avoid using general one-word key words because you, for sure, cannot rank high in the search engines. Use keyword phrases, which comprises of two or more words.

However, using unique keywords is a very great way. For instance, if you are selling stamps, instead of using the word "stamps" as your keyword, you can use the brand name of the stamps e.g. goleza self-inking stamps, goleza forge-proof stamps, goleza round stamps, etc.... whereby goleza is the specific brand name.

I prefer long tail keyword but no more than 3 words. Single keyword is too hard to be ranked and almost all single keyword is not buying keywords. However, you better always do keywords research since long tail keyword isn’t always profitable.

Right, single keywords often aren't really specific, more traffic but lower conversions. Long tail often means higher conversions but significantly less traffic, so it kinda evens out, except one detail: Long tail is easier to rank.

I have a 4 word longtail keyphrase for my home page. The keyword phrase can also be broken down to sub longtail keywords. In my case, the first 2 keywords and the last 3 keywords forms another "long tail" keywords. So basically, I have 3 long tail keywords to rank for. So far, my home page is ranking 9th position (first page) for the full 4 keywords. It is ranking 13th position (second page) for the last 3 keyword phrase. The first 2 keyword phrase is quite competitve and is not in the top 100 spots. These are for broad searches. In quotes (phrase), they are all in 1st or 2nd spot.

What I'm trying to say here is that when looking for long tail keywords, see if there are also potentials for sub-longtail keyword phrases. My traffic has doubled.

I usally choose 4-8 simple keywords for my site and up to 100 long tailed keywords. The main thing is to choose proper keywords with low competion. I use Pastuhov database for it pastukhov.com
