What matters most for SEO is the Domain Authority and relevance of the site you get the link from.
Guest posting will enable you to get a back-link from a higher DA site, but is much more challenging to do . . . your own site and blog must be very high quality before you apply.
Do both if you can, and blog commenting, forum signature back-links, and other on-page and off-page SEO.
