    How important is email marketing?

How important is email marketing? The company I work for has decided that all we will email to clients are newsletters.

The thing I can't understand is how it can work if, most of the time, we tend to delete the emails in our junk folder without looking at the emails.

A lot of the subscription emails I have received all go to my junk folder and they are deleted without a glance. So how important can email marketing be?

    It can be very important.
First not all people delete their mail, I know I do delete most of ma emails like you do , but sometimes I title catches my eyes I open email and follow links inside, maybe even buy something if poroduct is good or sign up for some offer...
There is something called opening rate and thiso pening rate vary and depends how good or bad you are treating or spam your list.
If you send them only good stuff and not spam them with affiliate offers the majority of them will open your every email you send them, but if you send them all kind of stupid offers, like big names do these days, then your opening rate will be very low.
So don't just put newsletter fo sake of sending something, it needs to be very good newsletter, that people will like to read.
Then you can sometimes offer some product or service to them and expect some great results, but don't send them offers that you didn't even tested by yourself and you know for sure that this product or service work and you can realy recomend it and it will help your list in some way.

Email marketing is an effective tool in promoting your products or services. You definitely need to email only those email addresses that you already have an established rapport with. You cannot spam from purchaed email lists.

    Thanks Nemanja and SEOArbiter.

The whole notion of email marketing had me worried. For now I think we will stick to the newsletter and the product specials and free trials etc. I wanted to ask though, If we emailed existing clients to check if they are using the system to its full and offer them tips, tricks and ideas, would that be considered spamming? or useful information?

In the US you must follow the CanSpam guidelines, I don't know about there. Because you have a relationship you could probably email them, but you are required (here) to list a mailing address and have a working opt out system in place. Best practice is to have a double opt in system in place to obtain your mailing list. That is where they sign up for the mailing list and then must confirm the registration, usually via a link in the welcome email.

It is OK and it is not spam for sure(if they where opt-in in the first place).
I can see that you are already doing email marketing, you are promoting other products but without the profit, just find some good products and instead of free trials you offer them products you are affiliated with. These free trials offering are OK here and there, but they are somehow useless, like you have turned on TV and left to other room to work on PC....

Be aware that as long as some e-mails don't reach the junk folder, there will always be some people who will take advantage of this and Spam.

Many companies just like mine want to hold on to their client base or whomever they have left.

I see a day when people won't even know what the word Spamming means anymore.

Not that it will be replaced by another word, but simply because Spamming will have gone extinct probably due to new emerging technologies such as digital signatures becoming mandatory in every e-mail thus acting as a deterrent and eventually eliminating Spam altogether.

Right now, Spammers are not going away without a fight, but as of this writing, they are losing the battle over your inbox.

The free trials are for a document management system the company I worked for designed, which is why you have seen me promoting it . I have not ventured into other areas yet because the thought of doing that is scary, to be honest. I am still new to the whole internet marketing area so baby steps are working for me at the moment.

That's just it. I couldn't spam another person relentlessly because I don't enjoy being spammed myself. So I can imagine how others must feel with a junk inbox ten times worse than mine. I think it would then be safer to have the opt out in place and also add into their registration emails that they have the option of additional support and information when they need it. It might help to show that we are here to help, but not overwhelm with special offers and emails that have no value to them and their business. That's why I set up the 24 hour support network as well, giving clients the option to either talk to us directly, or use the information in emails. Do you think that's too much?
