Social media is a way to transmit, or share information with a broad audience. Everyone has the opportunity to create and distribute. All you really need is an internet connection and you’re off to the races.

On the other hand, social networking is an act of engagement. Groups of people with common interests, or like-minds, associate together on social networking sites and build relationships through community.

Social media is a platform which enables people of online world to share information. Where as social networking is communicating with people via online/internet.

In my opinion social networking is a public networking is composed of people that are linked with one another by particular type of assurance. It could be the ideas, principles, business, anythings.. And Social media is like a channel which is often used for communication. It is a way to deliver one’s message and enables one to raise his voice. You don’t have to visit some office or a particular place to take benefit from social medias...

Personally they are synonymous to me. However, Social Networking comes down to active particiation where as Social Media offers a venue where you can leave your comments or thoughts on the topics.

That in a nutshell. It is hard to explain it in a way that is understood as there both the same but totally different.

Social Media is the platform that connects people around the corner of the world to connect to each other and share experiences, ideas and help to build global communication, on the other hand Social Networking is a kind of active participation in groups who share common interests, Social media helps to connect to the world digitally, but Social networking helps to connect virtually as well as physically.
