I know this method since months and it was a very good method to increase the PR but at this time it isnt as easy as it was.
Do you have to change your sites A record to point to Tumblr? As when i tried to set this up it doesnt seem to save it without changing the web site record.

This is good for getting a tumblr account to have pr, but it wont get your site PR as Tumblr does not allow you to fake a site without setting the A name stuff up.
However getting a tumblr blog to a good PR fast and then using that as part of traffic and link generation is a good plan. If you can actually use tumblr in a way that gets your account genuine followers then by sharing good photos with your site linked will work. We get a lot of extra links and a fair bit of traffic from tumblr. But only if you understand how to use it and not by trying to make the sort of trick described here work (as it wont)
