The reason it's quiet is because people like you post stuff that doesn't make sense, and half the posts are spammy that are asking questions that can be found out by a simple google search. Unfortunately the forum has very little value these days due to a low threshold of spam members and people selling links that are just not effective anymore. It's a shame because IMT had great potential a few years ago. There is just no intelligent conversation anymore.

Yes, mostly of you are right to some extent + some more stuff...
And issue with useless posts/threads I hate the most, surely this is not what I have had in mind back in 2010 when I started this forum, but we tried(I guess not hard enough) to fight the "useless SPAM"
and it is just keep coming again, only God knows how many threads and posts we moved to junk already ...

Forum is based on members and engagement/quality of those members, if "right" critical mass isn't reached forum will be quite, because new members come and same amount of old members are going away(not visiting/writing).
In a meanwhile all members expect to see something interesting shared, but they won't share or ask something themselves, so we ended up having a quite forum.

I have a huge forum with half a million members and we are having even lower activity than imtalk.

I see several factors influencing it. No1 is facebook.. that site has killed discussion forums with its groups feature.

    2. People don't use vbulletin anymore.. the new younger generation is not aware of what a forum is or how to use it. I find it very difficult to get forum posters these days.

    3. Blogs kill forums as its easier to access blogs and get replies through comments.

We pumped in a lot of money and continue pumping money in our forum which is now a social network and I see that advancing technology is the only real way forward.

I must agree with this as well.
I would add that places like fiverr are killing forums with BST sections as well.
In my book, there is no better place to trade than well run and not heavy censured forum.

I am also acting admin on an open source web editor forum. Five years ago it was a vibrant place with several posts a day. Now we see only a few questions a month. We do continue to see usually two or three new registrations a day and the forum software usually counts three to four hundred visits a day. I know that some of these are real visits because I see visits to a related mini-site coming from a link on that forum.

Because of changes in the online environment there is less need for a feature limited web editor today. There were three, possibly four, general classes of users of the software a few years ago.
    1. People putting up personal websites
    2. People putting up small business sites
    3. Internet Marketers putting up sales pages
    4. And, maybe, part time or amateur web developers

The two strongest factors in the decline of usage for this software, in my opinion, are the advent of Facebook and the ease of use of WordPress. One or the other satisfies the needs of most of those who struggled with a stand alone web editor to develop a web presence.

Also, development on this software has all but ceased. The lone developer that was working on the project in his spare time has been working for Mozilla under contract and they have been keeping him busy. The software was originally developed by a team under a development contract from Lindows. The lead developer from that effort has a new product. This new web editor has support for HTML5 and CSS3.

I use both WordPress and static sites. The static sites are primarily mini-sites. Static sites use less resources on the server so there is still value to them if building a site with only a few pages. I use the newer editor for most of my new development work because of the HTML5/CSS3 support.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the core team on the old forum continues to check in at least several times a week. Any questions posed in the forum usually have good answers within 24 hours. That forum is not dead, but the pace is very slow there.

Well, I believe every forum on the internet is 'quiet'... unless some owner are crazy enough to play some sort of audio when they browse the forum. There you go.

Nothing much, I've added mandatory introduce forum to fight the SPAM, where new members write their introduction posts.

A few years ago I thought that forums are so nineties and that no one actually hangs out there anymore, looks for answers or participates in discussions - I actually thought there are no discussions, that forums are practically dead. I was really happy when I found out that situation isn't anything I've imagined. In my opinion, the main problem is that people nowadays like to be entertained, they are too lazy to put in some effort, to give something in order to get something back. Forums are not an "instant" thing and that's why I believe that imtalk may have some quieter times, but that people who seek genuine conversation will stay here.
