Avast! 2014 is not helping with your Internet Marketing efforts!! I updated my free Avast! AntiVirus a day or two ago. I visited one of my sites last evening and was a bit shocked at what I saw. The new version comes with ad tracking and social tracking blocked by default. The site I visited uses social buttons, some banner ads and Adsense. None of these things were showing and it vastly changed the design of the site. My first thought was that the site was broken due to some problem with the server, but when I thought about it for a few minutes I remembered the update and checked the Avast! installation. When I unblocked the ad tracking and social tracking my site displayed as designed.
I did learn a couple of valuable lessons from the experience. Text link ads do display. Alt text also displayed for the banner ads if the images included alt text. Some of the banners had no alt text and most of those with alt text were poorly written. If you use banner ads you would be well advised to check the alt text to be sure that it is there and to be sure that it carries a call to action. Some of the banners had things like 'affiliate image' as the alt text.
