Thread: How hard is it to registar domain with one company and host on another

OK, bluearrow got me thinking about changing registrars.

Here is my situation:
I have all my domains through Godaddy, I also host through Godaddy. I use the Shared Deluxe hosting plan so I can run multiple sites through one hosting plan.

My question is, if I transfer some/all my domains from godaddy to another registar, how hard is it to use those domains with my Godaddy hosting? Keep in mind that I have folders that I point domains to now within the hosting plan.

I have just never done this and it looks as it is cost effective to do so.

It should be just a matter of changing the name servers in your registrar account interface to the GoDaddy, in your case, name servers servicing your domains. I have never hosted with my registrar so I have edited name servers often and it is no big thing. I have moved sites to other servers necessitating a NS change as well. Name server changes can take a bit of time to propagate through the DNS system, but I think that is more applicable to moving sites to new servers than to transferring registrations since there would be no real change to the servicing name servers as long as you set up the account promptly.

That would not be a problem as long as you have the GoDaddy name server information. You can probably find the name server information by poking around in your hosting account control panel or the associated help files. If you don't find the information a call to support may be in order. The current name servers will be listed in your registration account control panel, so it may be of value to take note of them before any transfers.

If you have any new domains in mind it may be worth considering registering one with your alternate registrar and hooking it up to your current hosting account to get familiar with the procedure without involving a live site. An alternative would be to first transfer your least important domain to gain the experience.

Its always better keep your Domain registrar and Hosting provider separate. Specially when you are using small or medium size web hosting providers. They might stop you from accessing to everything if you have problem with one product like late for payment.

Some hosting sites offers free domain for a year in registration process but they charge higher for domain renewal.. My domain registrar and hosting provider is also different.

No, it is not difficult. Simply you can register with an operators service and easily you can host to other hosting company.

Its not hard, i always prefer to host elsewhere than domain registrar!
