Do we really need whois protection?

in order to have whois protection for domain name, as far as i concern we need to buy/pay that services, go daddy service charge is around 9usd,

the question is do we really need that whois protection service?
are people out there can do something bad to us if they know our address by looking at our whois website

how can i conceal that address without pay for the service? if just name and email are ok for me.. BUT all my details such as address, phone number are being publish to whois, go daddy are very smart, they can get a lot of money if customer want to hide all those details

I lost my main Gmail address to spammers in two days, when the protection went off... Lesson learned the hard way.

I would never fake my info...That could lead into even bigger problems.

Just create another email for domain purchase, it might not affect much.

I use whois protection for all my domains, I prefer some anonymomity. By the way Whois protection at Namecheap.com is free for first year and only 2$ plus on second year.

Domain owners have to submit all their details as per ICANN rules. There are hackers who misuse the information provided under whois, they may send spam mails,or may cause harm to the website.
So if your website is personal website or a site that does not provoke hackers you can very well avoid private registration (whois protection).
There are other services which provide private registration cheaper than you have specified.I know XnYnZ.com which provides free private registration if 5 or more domain registrations is done with them.
If you avail a private registration then all your details will be hidden using proxy details by the respective registrant, you can check that using whoisxy.com thereby eliminating the chance of being hacked.
