Transferring A Domain From One Hosting Service To Another??

As Thread Title Says, I need expert guidance of transferring a domain from already hosted to a new hosting service. I actually started my blog with a less know company who was then offering free domain with their hosting package. Since at that time, I was not in position to afford some good and expensive hosting so I have to stick with it. Now I dont want to host my blog with them. So I further need guidance from you guys that what steps should I taken so that my blog/domain name successfully transfer to new hosting server. Although I have already hosted few domains with them and I am quite satisfied with their service yet I need some honest suggestions from expert guys here so that my blog ranking and traffic does not harm.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

I recent did this because of TOS problems with my original hosting service. The biggest hurdle was moving a large database. Cpanel only handles about 50MB through phpMyAdmin. I tried doing the backup and restoring from backup on the new host, but could not get that to work through cpanel. I ended up uploading the databases to a directory I created in the root section of the hosting account and asking support to load them into the databases I had set up. They took care of the problem post haste. You could probably do the same if you know the MySQL syntax.

Wordpress advises to change the file path as the last thing before making the move, but you can also edit the file path in the database after the move. Then when the blog is up and running on the new host change the name servers on the new host. I have seen recommendations to leave the original site operational for 48-72 hours after the move to allow time for the DNS record change to filter down through the system. Then you can delete the old directory and database from your original host.

Thanks Wink. I will be careful about your suggested things during my transfer of domain process.
