Logo Design Symbol or Wordmark – Which is Right to Use?

How many people believe that a logo is meant to be attractive and showy in order to catch the attention of target customers. However, for a logo design, being visually attractive is secondary to being effective. I don't think it is necessary for an entity to adopt a cool symbol in its logo all the time. Even though Coke and Pepsi are rival brands, both have contrasting elements in their logotype.
But if i had to choose b/w symbol and wordmark, i go for symbol... let’s see if you guys have valid points to prove your opinion.

A wordmark is a text trademark as opposed to an image trademark. A wordmark may use stylized text or a specific font, but it is recognizable as a written word.

FOr branding purpose, I strictly consider to use logo rather than wordmark but if you design wordmark which can be also represented as logo in future with flexible printing option, there wouldn't be much problems. You wordmark must have simple design which can be memorize by your visitors easily and can recognize your brand if it is displayed at exhibition or trade show fair.
