From what I know its all about browser compatibility. The coding used to create browsers aren't all the same, and they read code differently. Most of the time, when I create a site and it works in firefox and Chrome, but not IE, its all to do with the CSS in the site. When images don't show up in their proper positions etc.

All in all, you need to make sure that your site code can be read by more than one browser properly.

    This is true.

The best thing you can do is to make sure that your code validates properly at validator dot w3 dot org

Most of the time, I find, that errors in the code may get handled slightly differently by browsers. But, there are also occasions where the browser gets it completely wrong. New browsers are not as bad but IE6 was a big culprit for this.
