There are many methods of link building following.
1. Directory Submission
2. Social Bookmaking
3. Forum Posting
4. Blog Commenting
5. Yahoo Answers
6. Guest Posting
7. Press Release
8. Article Submission
9. Link Wheel
Don't bother to many links but focus quality links that come form relevant sites of high PR.
To do it faster use software/services/freelancers...
Around 15-30 a day, important is not really how many but how often.
yes there are many method of link building , but don't go for massive linking, just try quality link

I don't put article on my website (and no I don't spin it).

For building quality backlinks, forums posting, article submission, blog commenting and social bookmarking are the best technique for it.
well to do it on proper way ..
find niche websites and list first ..
spare your time to find niche qualityful website or niche authorized website ...
do research on it and than just do link submission manually with changing title, text and content and you will rock .. :)
And also give your site some time to prosper herself..Dont push her at very first day. Fill with some contents and share your posts.
It was all stated here, just an advice about doing some link building. Don't over do it, I suggest you build links slowly so your blog will not be flag as spam from the eyes of the search engines.
