Analyzing the links of the top websites for your targeted keywords indirectly gives you lots of new ideas for building links for your site as well.

which tool do you use for checking back links? I use backlinkwatch.com and sometime yahoo site explorer for getting links

Majestic SEO, Yahoo site explorer and Google webmaster tools. None of them show all of the exact same links and Majestic SEO is more in depth.

is that a paid tool? yahoo site explorer gives you a detailed answer and google webmaster tool is good, though google delays one day in their statistics.

Backlinkwatch isn’t accurate. A lot of my backlink didn’t shown there. I prefer SEO Quake which is fetching data from Yahoo Site Explorer. However, as we know the YSE isn’t work anymore. I’m still searching for another best and accurate way to check my backlink.

ahrefs is a new one that's becoming popular, which I have heard is really good. I used Open Site Explorer for a really long time, and was pretty happy with that. However, since I switched everything over to Raven, the Research Assistant in Raven pulls data using both Majestic SEO and Open Site Explorer, which I have found to be the absolute best tool for checking backlinks. Raven definitely isn't cheap though. If you work in an agency setting, you can expect to be paying at least $500 per month for Raven.

The best tool is Link Research Tools. It pulls its results from way more sources than any other backlink checker I know of. Obviously it comes with a huge price tag.

If you want a free tool, I recommend the Searchmetrics Essentials. Their backlink module is in a beta test right now (and hopefully will be for a couple of month) and is thus free of charge.

The best choice nowadays is majesticseo. Even with free account you can get a good "picture" of the backlinking profile.
