Are nofollow links noticed by engines?

    Hi again,

I am seeing natural growth in the links to my site, but most are nofollow. The question is, do the search engines pay any attention to these links?

Information from my site gets tweeted and sites are picking up the tweets and republishing the links. My guess is that this will benefit traffic, but not PR...

    Any thoughts welcome!

    Thanks

    Hi Hajoless,

it is believed that your backlinks should be as diverse as possible, i.e. they should include do follow/nofollow, high/low PR ones. So there's nothing to worry about the natural growth of nofollow backlinks, just keep working on building quality do follow links. BTW, Matt Cutts has several videos where he talks about Google's attitude towards nofollow, e.g. Are nofollow links irrelevant?, where he explains the benefits of nofollow links in terms of driving traffic.

In my opinion nofollow links are better then on links at all, but from what I have read across the net google only counts dofollow links.

Here is my guide on nofollow backlinks. Does No follow backlinks help you with link juice . The answer is yes and no. Googles does not count them as links for link juice. It still helps your rank becuase having a diverse link profile is very important and google sees there is only do follow links they will think something is fishy and make the site lose ranking. That is why best to get some nofollow links. I hope it helped.

Lot of sites have only no follow links.
Do you think we must erase theses sites? I have read nofollow lot of links ca affect your site negatively

Yes, search engines notice nofollow links and does not add them to its index. But it is believed that SEs crawl nofollow backlinks also for discovering good content also.

They are noticed and actually read through by search engines. It is just, in its most basic form, a html tag that tells search engines that you are not sure if the source you are linking to is a legitimate one.

    hi hajoless,

my advice to you would be to mix up bot do-follow & no-follow back links to your website as it will look natural in Google's eye.

i personally tend to get 15% links as no-follow & the rest 85% as do-follow links.

i hope this will help you to take a proper decision.

    kindest,

Back links containing both Dofollow/Nofollow are considered as natural links by search engines. Search engine counts nofollow links also when it comes from a worthy site.

Using nofollow links mean your links would be natural links as it has both dofollow and nofollow and natural links are liked by search engines also... but you don't have to build on nofollow there should be both.

Yes, sure Bot will pay attention to nofollow links. It will not pass any link juice and it will not be consideredas backlinks. But its only use , we gain traffic via nofollow also.

Google also give priority to the No follow links. We are not getting the PR of the site passed top your site in the No follow links but the traffic count and back links will have no problem for you.So, it can help for better indexing of your site.

Diversity is ALWAYS the key to a good backlinking strategy. Links have to look as if they are somehow "natural" so mixing them up across all different link types is a good idea. Obviously dofollow links are what we are all seeking for the best performance on Google but Google isn't the only search engine out there. They may have 75% of the wordlwide search market but the other 25% is still a significant percentage and should be considered when performing any SEO strategies.

I tend to find that Yahoo in particular likes a lot of incoming links of any sort where Google looks at the dofollow properties and bases their rankings more on what they consider are "quality" links. I have been able to rank very high with Yahoo on some competitive keywords by using a lot of inbound spammy links in the past but obviously this is not a good idea in the age of the "panda"..
