How to find links to your site

What is best way to find who is linking to your site? It's been awhile since I did that, like, a year ago, and the results did not seem to be accurate at all. Such as, sites which I knew had a link did not show up in the list.

    Cool

There are a few good ways I use, I'm sure there are good people on the site to ask (i'd ask seobunny very nicely for help on this!), sign up to google webmaster tools if you haven't already done so, this lists the sites google has found, also new google +1 analytics. Yahoo webmaster tools also provides good details on links. There are a few other good free sites for finding who links to your site, backlinkwatch.com and backlinkcheck.com they give you a good idea.

If we're talking about your own website, Google Webmasters Tools is probably the best option. You can also google link:yoursite.com. To find competitors' backlinks website promoters normally use backlink checkers, e.g. SEO SpyGlass.

GWT only shows you a small selection of the total links to your site so for this purpose is pretty useless. Spyglass or backlinkwatch are good.

I love the yahoo site explorer. You first go to yahoo.com. You then type site: your domain. It pop ups with all the backlinks. It ranks how powerful the links are. The site also gives more details about amount of links to link pointing to your site.

I also prefer to use the Yahoo link:command. Altavista and Alltheweb sometimes give a different cut of data regarding incoming links as compared to Yahoo. The Google Webmaster tool never seems to contain as complete of a list as these others, so I generally ignore it.

Backlinkwatch is a great tool indeed.

I'd also like to mention about SEO Quake firefox addon, which is an awesome tool to have for everybody. It displays a large range of parameters about the site you're on in FF, or the sites returned by a google search. It is a small toolbar on top of the site, or under the site in Google search, which quickly shows you PR, number of backlinks in Yahoo and Google, number of indexed pages, alexa rank, outbound links, etc. If you click on the Yahoo number, for example, it will take you to the Yahoo explorer page with all the backlinks.

This is a very quick way to get infos about every site you want instantly, instead of going every time and type site:domain in Yahoo. Saved me a lot of time since I found it.

To easily find who are linking to you and to know who are linking to your competitor, use SEO spy glass. From then on you can easily build a link exchange with your competitors backlink.
