High quality backlinks are not coming by an high PR backlink!

A high quality Backlink you can onlky get when the site which your backlink is posted have the niche related keywords in H1, H2 and H3 Title Tags.
Also the site must have niche related keywords as anchor textlinks to other related websites.

So its very useless to get an backlink on a catfood website when your content have fishfood.

The best links are those that are not bargained for. Where a website editor decides to tell the world about you or your product without compensation.

It depends on why you want the backlinks. If it is for better SERP's then any high PR, do-follow, in-content (ideally in the first 2 paragraphs) anchor link is the best.

If it is solely for direct traffic generation, then any backlink that is visible by your target market is the best. It really depends on your niche.

The best backlink is really from authority sites, preferably in your niche- quality does wonders over quantity and when you have a strong authority site, it doesn't matter if it is a blog, social bookmarking site, or whatever.

I think Rebecca's post sums it up.

I would not say that any of these "links" are better than the other. The higher the PR and the more relevant the link is, the better the link.
However, each on of these "link strategies" has strengths and weaknesses.

Blogs are quick to crawl, and are a good balanced strategy. Partnering up with other blogs is a great idea.
Directories are a great long term strategy.
Social media, as hogward stated (below) is a strong short term strategy with the added benefit of immediate traffic. If you have good content and a good strategy, social media can spread the word on your site exponentially giving you many links and a lot of traffic.

My suggestion to you is to do them all. This will help you build a balanced strategy. You can focus a little more on the ones that you see work better for you, but do at least a little of all of them.
