people are overplaying the social bookmarking card... There overplaying social media as well. Just because a site has a lot of traffic doesn't mean it has traffic relevant to your site. For example a massive community of say 50,000 users all talking about secrets in the kitchen has absolutely nothing to do with server operations in an IT environment.

So I believe you need to include that as part of your post here. Links from just anywhere don't really help. People have been massively building for the last 6 years. and over those years Google has been more and more aggressive at devaluing links and simply making links not count for anything when they come from the relevant sites.

So you can go off and plant 10,000 links. If they're all irrelevant to your site in a can of benefit much. People are always running around screaming the few things they learn about Seo. If I had 1/10 of a penny for every time I heard someone scream "content is king " - without explaining it any further because they are just dropping their signature link... I'd be rather rich.
