How Do You Check Your Backlinks?

I have always used Yahoo Site Explorer but have been reading some reports that it is no longer reliable.

The backlink counts for some of my sites have been fluctuating a fair bit lately, and I am not sure whether it is Yahoo Site Explorer acting up, or issues with the back linking services that I use.

Any suggestions for how to reliably keep track of the back links to a website?

Most backlink checkers (both free and paid) use the Yahoo API.

Do you know if that is the case with SEO Spyglass?

If so, have you had any issues with backlink counts?

I have read a report that the Yahoo API will be phased out this year, which means that all the software that uses it will cease to work.

I'm starting to use www.majesticseo.com for backlink checks alot more often. Really nice link history graphs in particular pulled from their own MASSIVE database of crawled sites. (It can take 2-4 weeks for new sites entered in to show numbers, but worth the wait.)

Also my favorite online tool is this particular backlink checker which breaks down .edu .gov .net .org .etc TLD's into separate sections. Nice!

My bad, I was putting urls in without "http://".

Once I put in "http://mysite.com" it works.

I check on mine with Google Webmaster tools. Even though it only shows links on google, it still gives me an accurate number, and I can follow the links to keep an eye on them as well.

Just checked one of my sites that I have registered with Google Webmaster Tools against Yahoo Site Explorer.

Yahoo says I have 95 links.
    Google says 120 links.
    That's close enough.

Weird thing is Google shows some links that Yahoo doesn't, and vice versa.
I checked a couple of these links and they actually exist, so it's not like the links are ones that have been deleted or anything.

So that tells me that neither Google Webmaster Tools or Yahoo Site Explorer are completely accurate, and that the actual number of links could be more than the 120 that Google reports.

The figures from each are not always 100% accurate, and Google and Yahoo use different algo's when they're indexing. I have had similar experiences with both, and I know how many links I have created, so I can see which have been found, which are new, and which I did not create.

So even if the figures are not 100% accurate they are good for comparing websites, and for looking at the TREND in the backlink count ie up, down or steady

Definitely. I use them to check impressions and see where I can focus more on backlinks. With webmaster tools, it shows me the links to the sites that link back to me, and which keyword performs the best. It lets me look at the rather enormous list of keywords I have here and work on these, to see if I can find a more productive keyword, and then implement it onsite. Then, when I have a list of keywords that do really well, I monitor the rest of the site. ( which I generally do all the time) and see if they have found errors, crawl errors or links that don't work properly, and I fix it.
