What is importance of free directory submission to get higher PR? Is there a number that i have to reach in terms of backlinks to achieve PR5 ?
Would exchanging links with a few quality PR6-7 links help ?

Quality and relevancy of links plays important role compared to quantity of links.

So many factors influences number of links you need for PR5....... that all depends on number of do-follow links each web page carries with it, Link juice each site passes on to your site depends on this factor.

I would like to suggest you to concentrate on quality of link not on quantity of links.For getting high pr you have to built quality back links as maximum as you can.Only this is the way to getting high pr of your site.

Authority links, (high quality, one way links) get as many as you can and continue getting them even after your site is ranking high on the first page of Google.

from what i've seen so far, websites with high pr have thousands of links some of them have over 50000.

OMG... never knew the prices.. sometimes I see ads with "Links from PR9 - $150 per month"
so I thought it would cost like this..

but 500-1500 is very haaaaaard!

I have a 3yo PR5 site with just over 1000 backlinks. (According to MarketSamurai anyways...) The highest backlink is one each PR4-5-6, several 1-2-3's. Only 14 links are PR1 and higher. There's 29 EDU and 7 GOV links (ALL PR0 incidentally!) - not one of which I built, scraped, outsourced or begged for.

It dominates top rankings because it absolutely nails an underserved NICHE. And OTHER PEOPLE naturally often bookmark and link to the site without me having to beg. Few of my other sites are like that - unfortunately...

What's interesting is once you get and stay on Page 1 - you'll tend to STAY there - and with time it becomes ever harder for anyone to dislodge you. So the self-strengthening interia and authority just keeps building on itself.

That doesn't mean I slack off. I gently keep promoting this site here and there occasionally - Seriously, once you reach the top there isn't anywhere else upwards to go... but its a loooooooonnng way down -- so I don't do anything too agressive and STOOPID to wreck a good thing.
