Seobunny's post is more than enough ... But to make the long story short - just diversify your anchor text !

Try and mix in some NF links along with your DF links and remember to vary you links anchor text as you build.

Don't build random links but well planned links with quality and relevancy in mind. Think like Google!

As for offsite SEO I try to build my own link property networks using web 2.0 / Social network / Social Bookmark/ rss / static pages etc. Lots of work but safer then most of other methods. I have total control of links goto money sites.

Do white hat seo which follows G guidelines. This is not only after Panda & Penguin era.. This will work forever. And one more thing is, it would be good if you avoid over-do anything..

Join discussion (forums, blog) and get relevant backlinks, you need a big variety of backlinks but remember NOT in a short period of time.
