Any luck with Recovering from the Penguin Hit?

Hi all. Sorry if I missed a specific thread about this, but I was wondering if anyone was having any luck recovering from the Penguin update? I haven't done much with my affected sites up until now. Instead, I started working on some new projects. Now I thought I'd devote a little bit of time to trying to get some of my rankings back. Here is my plan:

    1. De-optimize my post titles that were far too keyword based.
    2. Make sure that I don't have any old posts that have a keyword density that might be considered too high.
    3. Put up some fresh posts.
    4. Work on watering down my backlinks. I know that I have far too many exact match anchored links pointing at my sites. I am starting by dripping generic Supercharged bookmarks at them. I'm thinking of doing some commenting on related blogs w/just my name as an anchor. I will also be using some 2.0 sites with more general anchors and then maybe hitting them with a Fiverr blast or more SC bookmarks. I don't really want to start aiming a bunch of garbage links directly at any of my sites.
This is where my question comes in. Has anyone found any other methods for taming the Penguin? How about other sources of easy, but worthwhile, generic backlinks to point at sites that have been spanked due to over-optimization? Thanks for any input.

That's a good plan right there. One thing to keep in mind is to make it natural-looking and consistent. So, once you do recover, keep it going. In terms of natural-looking, I'd reverse engineer the links of your competitors in top 10 and see where they're getting links from and get the same ones or the same kind. Figure out the percentage of where their links are coming from and try to stick with the same proportions. I would vary the backlink sources as well. Try video cms links, filesharing sites, press release and directory links. I've been thinking about the G darlings like Target , etc..., Target has an official tumblr. I get an official tumblr. They have an official youtube channel, etc... Mimic what the big boys do for your 1st tier, then do the bad boy stuff to it. These guys of course do massive adwords campaigns.

I've been testing with this by starting small campaigns and pausing them to see if it helps to have your site in the adwords system (nothing really conclusive yet). But, it's all about testing what works in your niche. Some niches, in reality, won't have a high number of forum links (just an example) as backlinks. If you go and get a bunch, your site's profile won't match what's the norm for that niche (or even just that keyword phrase).

Sorry for the rambling... Hope some of this can spark your own testing ideas.

Luckily all my sites are not hammered by penguin update, but after the last update that slap most good sites, this is what I do.

    1. I act quickly and spend 2 hours each day to de-optimize all my onpage SEO site.
    2. reduce my daily backlinking amount to lower amounts submission.
    3. increasing amounts new post for fresh content to the site.
    4. i set my own blog network, so i can control all over in my hand.

I believe, when your seo method look natural and consistent, you'll safe.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to run SEO Spyglass on some of the currently ranking sites and see what jumps out at me. It will be interesting to see if the Adwords campaigns make a difference on your sites.

most of the sites that were slapped will just move on. If you continue to build quality links and add good content, dilute that anchor then you should pick up in the long run.

What kind difference you are try to reffering to? If you mean on SEO (page rank, G judgement, etc), its not. Adword won't change your site become a higher on PR, but sure its can delivered targeted visitor to your site.

Fundamentally, in theory, adwords should not have an organic seo affect at all. BUT, who knows what G is doing. I have friends that run multi-million dollar adwords campaigns and talk to google daily. Oddly enough they rank for organic with little linkbuilding. I'm sure they have strong site, etc... and budget, but it never hurts to test. I'm also checking to see if G tends to help sites that are in the G aff network like Target, etc... Who knows...

Well SEO has reached far and wide and not everyone has the opportunity of talking to Google and ranking without much link building. Maybe their on page is rather good. As far as Penguin is concerned I haven't the foggiest on how you will be able to recover while building links without really building links. My guess is that it might take a while for you to recover.

I have merged your thread with this one as it gives advice on how to deal with penguin updates and also how to make sure you are not affected by it again.

Yes of course, I got recover one of my client's site where he had more spammy links from blog comments and forums profiles (Luckily not too many). What I did was, wrote 300-1000 words articles on theme, post on blogs (Created theme related blogs on web 2.0), publish articles on press releases sites. I used various anchor texts in most cases. I made those links to get index by Google with some pinging services, after about 7-10 days, the site was back, but not to exact place, 2 places down (#7, earlier was on #5 and dropped to # 393, but now stable at # 7). So, working on it to push up further now. So, I guess, contextual link building works still....

Contextual links will always work if they are not created on massive scale and with poorly spun articles...
The best links are in content editorial links from related webpages/domains, they will always work.
