Being on the same IP was the lesser consideration. The unrelated nature of the content on the two sites was my major concern. I do have related sites on shared hosting and cross links do show in WebMaster Tools.

how do you check the IP and interlinked sites
If your sites are on shared hosting they have the same IP address for all sites on the account unless you are offered additional IP addresses at an extra cost. If you are unsure you can check by domain name in most whois databases. You will get a good deal of information from whois lookup. If you don't have a favorite whois lookup just do a search and you will find thousands of options, mostly free to use.

This is just one among many things they updated this time:
6 Changes Every SEO Should Make BEFORE the Over-Optimization Penalty Hits - Whiteboard Friday | SEOmoz

As I wrote in another thread:
Many sites on the net are hit by this update,
some of my also(didn't got any notifications), but the strange thing is that some of my sites and sites of my friends which are not using any kind of optimization or linkbuilding at all are hit by this update,
it is clear that this update is not accurate as they wanted it to be(same like some previous updates).
And again some of my sites and sites of my friends which are using SEO optimization and link building are not hit by this,
but we will see in the days that will come how this is going to effect our sites and in which ways.

Here is another reason of sudden and drastic changes in rankings some of you (and I) where experiencing.
Saw A Rank Drop This Week? It Could Be Google's Fault Says Matt Cutts - State of Search
I hope they will sort this out soon.

But as always just build sites and pages for visitors first, google will find its way(at east eventually)
and if you are building links to jump start your pages or whatever, diversify and make it natural as possible, think in which ways and how humans will naturally link to your site and do it that way.
And don't over do it, it is just not good and not natural at all.

I got no message from google, my site just disappeared from the ranking on all of the pages I used the supercharged bookmarks on. I don't think I can definitively say this was a factor but to date they are still not ranking in the same position they were 4 days ago. I will have to wait and see what happens and if things bounce back but at this point I think much of my SEO efforts have been flushed.

Any suggestions to get back and fast?
Some cheap but good services to use as a suggestion?
    Good article directories?
A strategy that you have recently used that worked and left you unaffected?

    HELP!

Thanks in advance for any replies!

    Cheers
    J

I have done my analysis of websites that are ranking well. The majority of them that have great rankings have minimal anchor text, hardly any exact match or even partial match and only use their name as a link.

In my case, the affected sites are could be sobreoptimizados with a more or less repeated anchor and those that have the exact word in the domain name of the title, regardless of whether I've done it SEO work or I have not done.

I think the whole point of this new algorithm change is discourage all types of backlink spamming so I don't think trying to get more back links would work. Unless those are from a related niche or same.

It needs bit of a time to see how this effect to sites. Some of my sites now showing a traffic drop too. Sites which I have done lot of social bookmarking.

The whole point all along was to discourage "blackhat spamming" which is a contradictions of terms because "spamming" is blackhat either way you look at it. I really believe the main focus now is to have deliverable unique content to the user with the appropriate outbound links, keep adding content to your site, build links that have ONLY you site name and be patient about it. Underdeveloped domains, those that do not add content on a regular basis are going to lose, the sites that get links that pass PageRank, are going to lose, the sites that are getting anchor text keywords to rank for, are going to lose. The time now is to think outside of the box and realize you have to create compelling content, use social media profiles, and be recognized as an authority in the subject which you want to rank for. I realize this may not be easy, but is only my opinion.

Darkmoon got it right, nice observations BTW.

I see that some are seeking help and some don't know what exactly this is all about....
This is not about using to much article marketing or social bookmarking or profile linkbuilding in a way that only that is the problem, like article marketing is a problem or social bookmarking is a problem,
yes sure it is about that, but in a way that it is not natural to use only one method of linkbuilding and use anchors in a way I see most of the people are using it still.
Seobunny in her tutorials and me in few threads plus some other members where explaining this over and over again for years now and people are just don't get that messages...

I have said many times you need to make it look NATURAL.

And don't build links from only one resources or with one linkbuilding technique, you need to DIVERSIFY, this s the key, always was and will be.
Furthermore building links only periodically and in bulk is a great way to make it look as a SPAM linkbuilding, you need constant flow of backlinks, but no exactly the same number every day 20 or 50 links,
it needs to be natural flow, one day 2 links, other day 21 links, 3rd day 11 links, 4th day 0 links, 5th day 7 links, and so on...
One more thing is that people are over doing with backlinks and backlinks become overkill in SEO and google can spot that from a mile, because it is not natural.

You just can't build links this way anymore, you just can't this is not 1998.
First we need to plan our sites for visitors in mind and we need to be smarter and adopt to a new things, like ways of linkbuilding in this case, most of linkbuilding methods are OK to use still but you need to use them right.

This is just so wrong. Google would never intentionally penalize sites in a way that would open the door to negative SEO.
The worst they would do would be to ignore "bad" links from crappy sites or from unrelated pages.

I had one guy contact me and ask me to remove all his links from my financial site - over 1,200 of them built up over a year.
My advice is that if you didn't get a love note from G, wait and see what happens before tossing away years of hard work.

I have had several link removal requests recently, too. Mostly these have been from article directories populated with articles from a paid distribution service, so they are throwing away the money they spent to be included in the article distribution. Many of them were placed by SEO companies, so they paid indirectly. I also have had a request to remove links from an SB site. The site referenced in the bookmarks claims no involvement in getting those links placed, but ideally that is how social bookmarks should be.
