In this competitive world, most of the Unique content of the blogs would take a month of time to get in to top position
Build manual high pr blog comments and web2.0 properties backlinks. It will definately boost your SERP easily. I am also trying these Tricks on my blogs and my blog is in Top Ten from my main keywords.
It depends on your site and your competition. It also depends on SEO technique that you are doing.
There's no exact answer to the question as the question is similar to
Whats the value of a car?
without even mentioning the model no. and the brand of the car.
Similarly, it depends on the niche and the competition on how much time the blog will take to reach the top.
It also depends on how much efforts you put in and how much investments you make into it to bring it to the top.
That might be on top within just few days to might even take years and sometimes even impossible.
For example, if you create a googleblog.com and want to top for the keyword "google", thats impossible! ;)
Time will be max. 2 weeks or 1 min.. or may be 1 month or may be 30min or may be 1 day also.. its depends on search engine and u r website popularity
This is depend blog content quality and submissions. A having low competition take 1.30 to 2 months...

I don't think this question should be how much time will it require for a blog to reach number one but how much effort instead - and my answer is A LOT! and if the hard work is out in it'll pay off quicker and for a longer period

I agree with you. You can market, market and market but if you did not select the right keywords for your website and the content you post on your site, it may still frustrate you. There are quite many factors to consider amongst which promoting being one of them, search engine optimisation being another key factor.
I think my shortest time I got one of my sites among top 10 SERP is 2 months. I do SEO pretty slowly.
