Is PR really really important or one can go without it?

The importance of PR depends on what kind of site do you have. If the the bulk of your web traffic comes from Google, PR is important. If your site does not require a search engine to find it, PR won't matter.

It is important, but it is not the only ranking factor, don't just focus on PR.
