    ..... make a google gmail account...

    then go to google adwords (search for it) log in using your google gmail account.... then go to keywords on the top menu...look for it...

    type the word you want to know about and finito

    Also..

    "tech news" has a 246k total global searches on a monthly basis...also the competition for the keyword is "quite low"

    trust me make a google adwords account (which is free to make)...and just use their tools (you don't have to use the adword service...just their tools)...

    Hope this helps....ALSO I dunno what SERP means...but I don't think that has anything to do, with the information you are looking for...you just want to know how many people are searching that on google, and the competition for it...(I just told you...)

    You can do it manually or you can do it by few rank checkers script/software, just search google for it...
    seomoz.org have free tracker, you can track up to five keywords per day for free...

    Hi,

    Checking manually is better than using tools. Because tools wont give correct results all the time it may differ..

    You can check it manually or tools are available for this.Lots of free tools are available on Internet.You can download any of them.Google Analytic tool also works better for this purpose.This can also help you to know the no. of visitors, back links etc.

    You can check your ranking manually or with Google analytics.

    For the Searching - you can make sure you always check the same way...
    * Logged out of G Accounts
    * Opted out of Personal Search
    * Use the same computer
    * Use the same browser
    * Use the same Search page
    * Use the same Search settings

    Apart from this you can use a tool called 'Keyword Country' which I have been using for tracking my website's performance.
