I think you mean "if you want to increase your SEARCH ENGINE RANKING", not PR (PAGE RANK)?
Lots of backlinks doesn't always equate to higher PR - it depends on where the backlinks are from.
Also high PR doesn't directly equate to better search engine rankings.

Having said that, it generally follows that the more backlinks containing your target keyword phrase as the anchor text that you get, the better you will rank for that keyword phrase.
