Like blog commenting and even social bookmarking author pages, it all depends on the rate and frequency of the gbot visits and caching. Enter the URL of the forum post into google. Find the link in the serp and click the right arrow to display the quick view and then click cache. On that page, you'll see the date of last cache / gbot visit. If it's old, then, there's not enough activity on that thread to warrant frequent caching by gbot. In this situation, ping it and backlink it until it gets re-cached. If the date is relatively new like within a week, then you may not have to ping and wait for it to naturally get re-indexed...
My rule of thumb is to ping everything..., backlink it, then ping the backlinks and so on...

It might be a problem if you ping too much forum post at once.
Pinging consists of inform the search engines that new content is available. I didnīt have any problems pinging massive. For pinging sites you can also use some tools. Ask Seobunny for Ping Alpha
It depends on what kind of forums. If the forum has a lot activities from their member, you don't have to do it. Just bookmark it.
