    How important is bounce rate?

I have a problem with one site where the bounce rate is quite high - about 58%.

I guess i am not doing something well enough to get this lower but how important is it.

By contrast many of the people who do stay look at 3-6 pages and more.

Should i be concerned about this in terms of Google ranking or more because i may be wasting valuable opportunities?

Bounce rate doesn't harm Google ranking but that means not that we ignore the bounce rate. But we must have to try to reduce the bounce rate which will directly help to increase the sales and traffic on the site.

If your site bounce rate is more than average than you must find out the reasons behind it.It sounds that visitors are not getting worth content. It affects Google, in my opinion Google also notice bounce rate of your site while Panda update.

58% actually isn't a bad bounce rate. If you were over 75%, then you would definitely have a problem. Bounce rate is something you should be concerned about though. If you are targeting a particular keyword on a page, and people are using that keyword to find the page but 85% are bouncing off of it, Google and Bing will both determine the page is not very relevant to the keyword in comparison to bounce rates of competitor pages targeting that keyword. It will eventually cause a drop in your rankings. If you would like to improve your bounce rate, best thing you can do is complete a keyword research project and find better keywords to target that are more relevant to your audience but still drive in traffic.

It may not be provable, but I'm very inclined to think bounce rate is a part of the algorithm. If a site is number 1 on Google and has a 95%-100% bounce rate, this is going to raise a red flag in Google since it has "Nearly everyone that is finding this site via Google are not finding what they're looking for" written all over it and that is the last thing Google would want to happen with people using their search engine.

A high bounce rate shows that your visitors are not showing much interest in your blog or website and you need to do something like .
    1. Make website look stunning and attractive.
    2. Make your site content efficient you'll need to provide value to users.
    3. Submit your website, in appropriate category of directories, bookmarking sites , articles sites etc.

Bounce rate generally reflects that you are getting the non targeted traffic for some of your keywords or your site have not enough/interesting contents to let the visitors stay on your site. You can check your site for any of these reason before you can take any steps.

If all of your traffic is exiting at the landing page, without even clicking through to any other page on the site, the bounce rate is high. It is harmful for a a web site. If your customers stay on your website for as long as possible the more likely you are to make a sale. You have to retain your traffic. . A site's bounce rate is a standard analytics metric, so you will likely uncover lots of useful data when you begin to research.

its different for different websites, and do not effect the ranking, if it will be 100% for long time ( My personal opinion ), also on sales website/page bounce rate should be high.
meanwhile you can check your page content + design to force visitors to stay on page as mentioned by "mtrick" first two options, also check the sources + keywords that are sending the traffic are they relevant to your website content ???....

I'm not sure if bounce rate can affect Google rankings. I've heard some say it does but I have never done my own research into this. You definitely want a better bounce rate though. A better bounce rate = Higher conversions.

    Thanks for the responses.
It may well be the setup or attractiveness i guess.
The site is offering a specialised service that people may know a bit about but probably need to know a lot more before they are ready to make contact. That said more effort all round in keyword targeting etc is required.

Bounce rate is important as it tells you how many people come from outside but don't spend time on your site. It might mean you need to improve on content or just the design when the bounce rate is high.

Yes BR is important. If high % then GooG sees your site as not relevant to the KWs that they sent the viewer to your site with. THus you go down in their eyes for that KW and down the GooG rankings also. Therefore you must have relevant content and Good content also. Keep them on the page for longer.

Had a look at what Wiki thought about it.

A bounce occurs when a web site visitor only views a single page on a website, that is, the visitor leaves a site without visiting any other pages before a specified session-timeout occurs. There is no industry standard minimum or maximum time by which a visitor must leave in order for a bounce to occur. Rather, this is determined by the session timeout of the analytics tracking software.

    where
    • Rb = Bounce rate
    • Tv = Total number of visitors viewing one page only
    • Te = Total entries to page
    A visitor may bounce by:
    • Clicking on a link to a page on a different web site
    • Closing an open window or tab
    • Typing a new URL
    • Clicking the "Back" button to leave the site
    • Session timeout
You can read more here: Wikipedia

Its interesting that you link KW's with bounce rates. Usually its linked to site design, site loading times, or content.

Its interesting that you link KW's with bounce rates.
With respect to search traffic I would guess that this is one of the bigger reasons for a bounce. It has been said that you have five seconds to catch a surfer's attention and thirty seconds to lock them in to the page. If someone hits the page and doesn't see that it relates directly to the search they are going to try elsewhere.

Load times may discourage a few, but they may or may not show up in analytics as visitors anyway. Unless the design hurts the eyes I think people will put up with the graphic design of a site if the information is there. Poor usability, lack of good navigation, could be a factor in bounce rate. For search visitors, content would be tied to keywords. The content could be very good, but if the visitor does not see immediately that it is relevant to the information in which they are currently interested they will bounce.

Other reasons for bounces could be curiosity seekers, inadvertent clicks or visitors that realize they have been to the page before.

I know. It was interesting to hear someone say that for once though, instead of the usual that's given as a reason when someone talks about bounce rates. It gives me another angle to look at things.

What I can say here is that maybe your website is not presenting what you are targeting? have you analysis the website content? is your main keywords in top ten ? maybe you are getting traffic but not getting audience attraction? try to trace out your on-page problems, hope you will be fine after reviewing it. try to post relevant content on your website.

A high bounce rate means that the user is not finding what they are looking for as soon as the page loads. That could be your site desig or that you are showing for unrelated searches. If it is the unrelated searches. If you design the site and content primarily around the user to direct them to what the site is about then you shoud end up showing for the related search terms and gaining there attention when they land.
