This is an older model and probably talking about on-page seo people only (bak in the day) not being creative enough to test cutting edge methods to take advantage of the algo of a given search engine to rank. Basically, why is figuring out how to "game" the system called black hat methods? G made rules and lateral thinkers are figuring out the rules and using ti to their advantage. Pretty interesting article for the time it was written. I'm going to call myself a lateral thinking seo from now on...lol...
