Are you trying to park domains or just let it to be expired?

you can buy and look at freshdrop dot net. there are domains that have expired and you can also see domain PR, also can make an bid for a good domain name.

I understand that you can pay hosts to pick up the domain as soon as it is dropped, but there is no guarantee that you will get it and this can be expensive.

Getting really good expireds with real and solid pagerank by registering them manually is pretty much impossible. You can't compete with professional grabbers. The best way is to use services like Snapnames. They try to grab the domain for you, if there are more people going after a certain domain an auction decides who gets it. Not the cheapest way, but at least a successful one.
