What is Designing Website for Search Engines?

I have read many web site designers do not design their sites for the search engines. This is a huge mistake because they are loosing lots of free traffic. Now if anyone can please tell me what does it mean by “designing website for search engines“

One should focus to balance netween desing for search engines and design for visitors, but with a little advatage towards the visitors, also you can design a website for SE's and for visitors too.
