What are the general methods to improve the rank of a website?

Maintaining a good rank is difficult indeed but you should follow Off page optimization techniques consistently. In addition to this you should keep a lookout for keywords your competitors are using.
Here are some tips for improving ranking
- Write content that is deliberately designed to attract links towards it
- Submit your website to social bookmarking sites
- Participate in social networking sites and related communities
- Do image and video optimization
- Post on online forums and niche related communities
- Write guest posts for related blogs to your niche.
- Write emails to other bloggers/ website owners in your niche offering them to guest post
- Submit your RSS feeds to feed directories
I have been using a tool as an aid to find good sources of improving ranking. I do blog commenting and with “keyword country” as my partner , I am able to find niche related blogs and keep an eye on my competitors.

Search engine "loves" unique content. Domain age, "couple of years" for trusted site. Blog comment, brings also good traffic.

I believe that Texture backlinks are good source to rank early your website because refers it to the best practices.

I've heard that page rank really doesn't factor into search engine rankings any more. Do you find this to be true?

Backlinks are key but you have to get diverse links, or links from as many different 'types' of sites as you can. This appears the most natural and gives you the best effect.

If you are referring to PR then you will need backlinks from authority sites. Meaning if you have backlink from a PR8 site then your website will instantly get decent PR as well.

Identify all relevant keywords related to your niche and rank them based on which to act on first. My preference is to rank highest those which bring you the biggest WINS - i.e. keywords which will bring you the easiest traffic first. This involves coming to a compromise between keyword searches (exact match) and competition (number of result pages online). Then for each keyword (beginning with the highest ranking one), focus on building on-page SEO, followed by off-page SEO. Proceed until you are done with all the keywords you identified earlier. By then you will have a range of relevant keywords bringing you in a whole lot of targeted traffic for your site.

There are many techniques and Google is changing factors very often. The one thing that will never change is the unique content, it also depends on your niche and the competition it faces.

You can improve your website rankling by doing effective link building to the keywords you are targetting. also do onpage optimization for those keywords.
