Your text or content must be loaded fast and your images files must be loaded when requested. If you are using wordpress, WP Lazy loader does all things with image loading and you will feel immense fast loading time of your web page.

I'm sure theres a tool in Google Webmaster tools that can help optimize your websites loading speed and it seemed to work well for me. Crawling has never been much of an issue however for me. I would keep image sizes to as small as you can to avoid larger loading times. Generally however if you use the sites image uploader, I have experienced faster loading times as its being hosted through them.

I think I have read that Google does not take as a factor the loading speed of the web pages...

It is recommended to have average size of total web page including HTML, image, script, css as 130k. And normally file size larger than 30 MB are not indexed and discarded by Google.

Like AnotherIdol said, use Google Webmasters. It shows you how fast your pages load and how it compares to other websites on the internet, and gives you tips on how to improve page load time.

I try to keep my pages under 50K. But generaaly, they are 50-100k. Occaisionally 130k.
