"grey hat" is the inbetween kind of SEO in which some people consider it to be black hat, while others think of it as more white hat.

Link exchanges might be considered grey hat.

I can't think of any how-to's being written on grey hat techniques.

Theoretically grey hat techniques are those illegal practices which are performed for some goodwill.

But in SEO, techniques which fall in-between of white hat and black hat are considered as grey hat.

    Some grey hat techniques are,
    - Unnatural keyword placement
    - Planned link building (two way or three way)
    - Paid links

White hat SEO completes follows the rules of the Google.Black Hat is against the rules.Grey hat is the combination between them.It uses both White and Black Hat methods. So, it is also against the rules of the Google. They are very much effective for high risk and high yield opportunities.

Grey hat or Black hat techniques are NOT illegal! Google is NOT the law, they just try to make rules for who can rank well and who can't. A technique could be white hat today and black hat tomorrow if Google decides it. Ultimately you won't go to jail for using these techniques. You MAY go to jail if you SCAM people though!! That IS illegal!!

Gray hat SEO is SEO techniques that take more risks than white hat SEO techniques but aren't likely to get your site banned from search engines. They are questionable SEO techniques but not in the same category as black hat SEO techniques.

White hat SEO follows Google’s rules explicitly. Black hat uses SEO methods banned by Google. Grey hat SEO applies some techniques which although not specifically banned have been mentioned by Google employees as not approved methods.

No one follows Google's rules explicitly. Google is against building backlinks in general. Every person who pompously says they only do white hat seo are only lying to themselves.

Gray Hat SEO is about risk versus reward. A large number of SEO solutions are categorized under Gray Hat SEO tools. Some Gray Hat SEO services tend to use more dubious devices and take bigger risks. While some Gray Hat techniques may largely obey search engine rules, others might land you in trouble and need serious consideration and necessary precaution before use.

Grey hat Optimization when it employs Black hat techniques is liable to get into an issue when the search engines may put new algorithms.Link farms and irrelevant links in websites got a blow after Panda update.Quality links in the slow phase is relevant and it will be permanent as conferred from my experience.

I would consider say, article submission via software to thousands of sites as grey-hat (still require manual approval and inspection for links to appear). Whereas blackhat would be mindlessly blasting profile links, as far as link building is concerned.

-Unnatural keyword placement (don't think it's against webmaster guidelines)
    - Planned link building (border line, some say have been penalized for linking multiple similar sites on large scale)
    - Paid links (against google policy from what I understand)

    Just my 2 cents.
